I am using GnuCash under windows. 

As I have just finished my most recent accounts and have a bit of time, 
and have also been tinkering with Ubuntu, I would be interested in 
trying out your patch.  However, as a linux newbie I am not too sure how.

Are you able to point me to a simple guide that shows how to apply a 
patch and install a patched GnuCash.
