importing balanced transactions into gnucash using OFX format

Hi
Has anyone had much luck importing balanced transactions using the OFX
format.  I can get the equivalent of a bank statement in, but could not work
out how to specify a journal entry crediting a liability account and
debiting an expense account. Any suggestions?
