merging accounts

set-up: Gnucash 2.2.6 on Debian Linux (xml file)

I have been maintaining two sets of acounts for several years (personal
accounts for two people, say Jane + Paul). I realize now that I should
have never set up two sets of accounts as I am only interested in one
joint P&L.

There are loads of transactions between Jane + Paul and apart from
having to add up a joint P&L all the time the many mutual transactions
are a total hassle.

What can I do to merge these accounts? I am happy to migrate to SQL and
do it in SQL if it cannot be done via the GUI.

Retiring the current accounts and starting a 3rd joint set is not an
option. I need to access the history constantly.

Each set of accounts contains hundreds of accounts and tens of
thousands of transactions. Many account names are identical.
Liabilities to external entities should be joint. Income and expense
categories are joint.

I know a large part of the migration would be manual but I am hoping to
automate part of it at least.

They are in daily use from morning to midnight and dozens of
transactions added every day as I go along.

I am envisaging something like this:

OLD
Assets.Bank ....
Assets.Other ....
Income.Cat1
Liabilities.Peter
Liabilities.CreditCards.bank1

Liabilities.Peter
Liabilities.CreditCards.bank1

NEW

Assets.Jane.Bank ....
Assets.Jane.Other ....
Assets.Paul.Bank ....
Income.Cat1
Liabilities.Jane.CreditCards.bank1
Liabilities.Paul.CreditCards.bank1
Liabilities.Peter
