Print invoice with payments shown?

Hi, I was hoping that I could create an invoice for $1000, then later process
a payment for $400, then when I re-print invoice, it would show $600 due. 
For me, adding the payment didn't affect the invoice amount printed.  Is
that the way it works or do I have something not setup right?  TIA
