I just dug through bugzilla and found bug 500427 --
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=500427 -- which is marked
as fixed (for the 2.2.1+ versions) back in late 2007. Could it have
broken again or was the backport unsuccessful? I may have followed the
discussion at the time and mis-remembered the resolution as being a
design decision. I don't remember it being different but I don't
believe I used any of the interim 2.2.2-2.2.5 versions so maybe it
broke again somewhere.

I haven't tried this under 2.3.x but that will be the next step. If
it's broken there, would it be better to reopen the old bug or create
a new one?
