Absolute end date ineffective

In trying to set the date in the "absolute end date" option in
Preferences>Accounting period, I find that I cannot do so by typing in
the space provided the date I want. If I try to set the date that way,
when I close the window the date reverts to the current date. So I
always have to use the calendar to choose the date. This situation
occurs in many -- but not all -- places where the user has the option to
choose a date.
More important, even when I am successful in choosing an end date other
than the current date, other routines ignore the end date I chose. For
example, if I want to compile an account report for a given account I
find that the routine will accept the start date I selected but not the
end date. The end date is always the current date.
I am using the 2.2.6 version of GnuCash shipped with Debian Lenny.
