CREATING CHECK FORMATS

I found some information about creating check formats, which seems 
simple. The thing I cannot figure out is how to create a GUID so I can 
save my new format. Please do not assume that I know what I am talking 
about. If creating a new GUID is not part of creating new check formats, 
just let me know. My question is about checks, not id numbers.

We want to use this accounting program in a business. We want to have an 
SQL back end, but we need a stable environment. If we want to install a 
2.3.x version for testing, how would we set up such a back end, say SQLite?
