GnuCash won't open after transferring data files from one box to another

I have two computers, a desktop for use at home, and a laptop when
travelling. Both have installed on them the Debian Lenny distribution of
Linux with the KDE desktop environment. Two years ago I started to use
in both machines GnuCash 2.2.6-2, which is the version provided with
Debian Lenny.

When I travel I copy all my document files from the desktop to the
laptop, and when I return home I copy the files, now newer versions in
some cases, back to the desktop. For two years now I have been copying
these files back and forth without incident, until now.

I was away from home for the month of June. Just before departure I
copied the files to the laptop as usual and used while away used GnuCash
in the normal way, thereby updating the main file and creating newer
.log and .xac files.

On return home I transferred back to the desktop the latest versions of
the main file and the newer .log and .xac files, and expected to be able
to continue to use GnuCash on the desktop. I was disconcerted to
discover that I can no longer open GnuCash -- either on the Desktop or
the Laptop.

When I try to open GnuCash a window opens with the following message:

"There are no Scheduled Transactions to be entered at this time. (1
transaction automatically created)" When I close this window GnuCash
crashes. I noticed that on each crash GnuCash creates a .log, a .LNK
and a .LCK file.  Deleting the .LNK and .LCK files makes no difference;
GnuCash still will crash in the same manner.

I thought there might be a permissions problem, but the permissions seem
okay. In any event they have always been those set when I first
installed GnuCash two years ago.

What do I do to get GnuCash running again?

Regards, Ken Heard
