Resizing description column in account register

I seem to recall this being mentioned, but don't recall how to solve it. 
In any account register, the "Description" column is much too wide for 
my tastes, and it's making the "Transfer" column be scrunched too small 
too read. I have tried to drag the right column width indicator of the 
"Description" column to be smaller. And it looks like it will allow me 
to make the column smaller. But it never stays - when I let go of the 
mouse, the "Description" column snaps back to it's current, 
much-too-wide size.

So what do I need to do, to make the "Description" less wide, and then 
make the "Transfer" column wide enough to read?
