Online currency update for XAU

In the list of currencies, I found XAU listed as Gold. When gnc-fq-dump
get the XAU prices, what do the numbers mean? Are they for ounces of
gold? grams? and what currency is this expressed in? USD? EUR? or INR
(Indian Rupees) which is the default for my gnucash book.
