MySQL and Accents

I'm testing the new windows version of GnuCash 2.3.12 and using MySQL as data
store.

I'm using my some spanish special characters (accents and the ñ) and they
are stored in MySQL tables as strange characters, even though I have tried
to use in MySQL the following character sets/collations:

latin1_spanish_ci
utf8_general_ci
utf8_unicode_ci
utf8_spanish2_ci
utf8_spanish_ci

MySQL is correctly configured because I can view these characters when I
insert them manually. How is GnuCash dealing with these character sets? Is
there a way of fixing this?
