No access to accounts after a kernel upgrade

(1) make sure your backups are safe
(2) it sounds like your Lenny is not well. Are other programs working ok?

If Lenny is not well, one thing to do is (a) copy all your data off the  
machine (perhaps using a live cd and copying to a usb stick) (b) do a  
clean installation of Lenny.
