A quickfill problem and an enhancement suggestion

That's good as far as it goes -- but what if you want to type something that 
isn't already in the set of alternatives?  The up-arrow/down-arrow convention 
does not conflict with the initial-backspace/escape convention.  They could 
happily coexist.
