Removing currency from values

I'm running on a Mac (Lion) and the version is 2.4.7 (pre-lion build but with two fixes)

I'm looking at custom reports, and loading an html file into LibreOffice calc.  The currency values appear as SEK 1,234.56 which to be sure is not strictly Swedish format, but that's a minor point.  The major point is that this is loaded into LibO calc as a text string, which means that it is left aligned, and even choosing right alignment doesn't really cut it.  I'd like calc to import these figures as numbers, without the currency code, SEK, and, now that I think of it, probably without the thousands and decimal separators, which should be left to the number formatting algorithm.  Is this possible, to produce reports where the values are merely numbers and not text strings?
