Just leave it with no money in it.  What is the problem with that?
You do not want to destroy the history by removing the account from
the records.  You can mark it as hidden if you want so that it will
not appear in autofill and so on.

Just a reminder, Colin: if you don't want an account to turn up in Autofill, you have to set it to "Placeholder." Hidden accounts won't show in the Chart of Accounts under normal circumstances, but will still show up in Autofill. Setting an account as a Placeholder account (which makes the account read only, as well) will remove it from Autofill.
