That's ok. As long as you don't install under .gnucash/books. That used to 
cause a lot of problems in the past.

That's normal. Save will only be enabled when you have made changes to the 
file. Since you're simply opening it, you can only save as.

For some reason the newly saved file is missing some date records (trn:date-
posted). These records are available in the original backup file though, 
because that one can be opened with no problems.

I can only imagine that the dates in the original backup file are considered 
invalid by Windows and hence removed during the save as action.

Could you check if your original data file has posted dates older than 1970 ?

For that you will have to unzip the file (for example with 7-zip), which will 
result in an xml file. You can search through this file with any decent text 
editor (not notepad, but wordpad will do) for any dates predating 1970.

The background: linux has a different start date from Windows. On linux the 
oldest valid date is somewhere in 1969, while in windows this is in 1970. So 
if for some reason a date older than 1970 got inserted in your data file, 
Windows would not be able to properly parse it and hence not rewrite it to the 
file.
