Mutual Fund Account Entry

I think I need an idiot's guide to setting up a mutual fund account.  It
seems that whatever I do I can only display the number of shares rather than
values in the Account Register 'Balance' field although an 'Investment
Portfolio' report will give me the values.  Any suggestions as to what I am
doing incorrectly.
