edit gnucash file in ubuntu

Sounds great. I have gotten the file edited to change the 1969 date to 1970 so Windows will like it. There is a lot about Gnucash that I don't know or understand, but I am saving all these good answers so that I can refer to later if need be.

Wouldn't it be simpler to start up Gnucash, alter the preferences to remove compression, save and quit?  Then you don't have to mess around with uncompressing the file, 'cos it will be in plain text ...
