You are misunderstanding the old thread. Back in February, the OP was using a development version, and was unable to read their data file. Their problem stemmed from that.
If you want to import transactions from one file to another, try Save As... or use Gnucash to QIF (http://gnucashtoqif.sourceforge.net/), and then Import.

This is a huge drawback. There should be feature that allows you to import
