Aryeh,

You are right that this is the way Gnucash works and I agree that it
is a limitation. On my list of enhancements is to add to gnucash the
capability to have both a transaction-level number and a split-level
number but it is not a trivial task because of the changes implied to
the user interface. No comment on when this might happen.
