Reducing File Size

Is this actually the case?

What I see is that the current file retains its established name (in my 
case, "accounts-2") while the backup, which used to be called 
"<filename>.<datetime>.xac", is now "<filename>.<datetime>.gnucash".

(WinXP-SP3, Gnucash upgraded from 2.2.9 to 2.4.0).
