Please add to your weekend todo list filing a bug for the crashes. Include one of the crash reports you'll find in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter as an attachment.
I've been using Gnucash with the splash screen turned off for several weeks (it's a major PITA in a debugging session) with no ill effects, so whatever it is isn't that obvious.
I'll consolidate the 2.3 changes into a 2.2->2.4 list on the wiki version of the release notes... it can go on my to-do list for this weekend. ;-)
