Recording one-time purchases

I have been using GnuCash for quite some time, but I'm confused on how I
should be recording "one-time" purchases. For example, furniture, which
tends to be expenses and is not really part of our personal "operating
expenses" month-to-month.
Is it correct to create Asset accounts for furniture (and other
"significant" goods)?
Thanks.
