Installation of 2.4.8

I am in need of an upgrade of my GC program.  I am currently using GC 2.2.9
on ubuntu 10.10.  (I don't really want to upgrade my ubuntu yet, but could).

I have read here and there that upgrading is a bit problematic.  I want to
install 2.4.8 onto my Ubuntu 10.10, is this possible and would I have to
build it or is the latest available from ubuntu?

I note on synaptic package manager it has 2.2.9-6.  Ubuntu software center
has the same version.



I see that 2.4.2 is available on 11.4 and I see it's a LTS version.

Would it be easier to upgrade to 11.4 then install the latest GC version.
(I'm not fond of the unity gui, I have it on my netbook).

I've never installed via building but it seem problematic.

Any ideas?
