Working with budgets

Greetings all!


I've been using GnuCash for accounting for some years, and I recently
decided I would give the budget tracking tool a try.  Despite reading
the wiki and working with tool, I've a few questions I thought I'd ask
more experienced users.  I apologize if these were asked before.  My
understanding is that for each period, I simply put in what I estimate
will be the value in a given account at the end of that period.  So,
for example, since I want to track my budget on a monthly basis, I
need to start each period on the 1st of each month, and then when I
run the report, it will compare the amount that currently in the given
account for the current day against the value I expect t o be at the
end of the period.  Is this correct?   Again, I apologize if this
question was asked, and I appreciate any confirmation or corrections.
