Others have responded regarding what is an asset versus an expense.

As to the tax report related questions, are you in the US? If not,
then the tax report features are not intended to apply to you
(although you can, of course, go ahead and use them if you find them
helpful). If you use the tax reporting features, you will not get some
kind of reminder. You will simply be able to run the report and use it
to prepare you US Income Tax return, assuming you set the accounts up
properly and entered all the year's data properly and completely.
There is a section in the documentation that talks about that.
