Placeholder, read-only, files on desktop

You don't say what OS/Distro you are using.

It's possible that the gconf settings are not working properly. If
you're on windows this could be due to your choice of name, because
certain characters are valid in a name but GConf doesn't like them.

A placeholder is a setting on an account.  You shouldn't be adding
transactions to a placeholder account.  If you are turning off the
placeholder setting then you need to save your data file.  If you're
doing that and it's still a placeholder after you reopen then it means
you're not opening the saved file.

The backup and log files go wherever you put your main data file.  If
you don't want them on your desktop then move them into a folder and
tell GnuCash that you moved it via File -> Open.  Or better yet you can
use File -> Save As to move the file to the folder and then GnuCash will
remember that.  Remember that GnuCash will always re-open the last-used
file, so you don't need to click on the data file, you only need to
start the GnuCash app.
