Checking account opening balance is missing

I installed GnuCash v. 2.4.11 on a Dell Latitude E6520 with Win 7/Pro SP1
64 bit, 8 GB RAM, i5 processor.

I followed the instructions for setting up a checking account, including
entering an opening balance.  However, the the opening balance is $0.  I
made sure the "Balance" column is displayed, as well as the "Total" column.

Did I miss something simple?  How do I fix this?  Can it be fixed even
after I enter transactions?
