account change during a period?

It also depends on what kind of account.  If it's an Income or Expense
account then you can use the Income Statement (aka Profit & Loss) Report
and it will tell you the difference from the beginning to end of the
period.

If, however, you want an Asset account, there isn't a good way to do it
automatically.  You could just take the balances and the start and end
and subtract manually, or you could try to open the register for the
account, View -> Filter By -> Date to set the date purely for the
period, and then run Reports -> Account Report which should give you a
total of debits and credits during the period.
