Let's remember the difference between Asset/Liability accounts and
Income/Expanse accounts.  The present value has a different meaning
depending on the type.  For Asset/Liability accounts the present value
would be about the same as the number on your bank statement for a given
day, but for Income/Expanse accounts a specific interval of time must be
defined.  That is only done in Income and Expense reports.  The number
in the chart of accounts is the grand total of all transactions in the
data file for that account.  This distinction is the reasoning that
Intuit and some other software developers use to justify calling
Income/Expanse accounts Categories.  GnuCash, on the other hand, follows
the traditional accounting nomenclature.
