Importing transactions as a CSV file

I understand it is possible to create txns offline (in Excel) and then import them into Gnucash as a CSV file.  What I have been able to find, though, is any description of the layout of the CSV file.  Any suggestions where I should look?

Is it possible to work this way for things like creating new invoices?  (And if so, where can I find the CSV file layouts ...?  :-)
