Transaction Amount Not Saving

I installed the current version of GnuCash (Mac OSX), made the configuration
changes and set up the chart of accounts.  When I try to post a transaction
(Cash debit / Equity credit) - the transaction #, description, transfer are
recorded (saved) but the debit and credit amount change back to blank and
the entered amounts is not displayed.   

Any ideas of what I did wrong?
