Status bar error in Accounts Tree window?

I don't quite understand Derek's post.

I would expect you to see your net assets showing if you have entered
opening balances as transactions with an equity account on the other side. 
So an opening balance transaction like
Assets:Checking Account +1000
Equity:Opening Balances -1000
should show Net Assets 1000 on the status bar (it does when I start from
scratch).
