Karen,

The account options are accessible for each account. For example, if you
are entering transactions in the account:

Assets
  Bank Accounts
    Bank of America
      Checking

Right click on the Checking Account. Select "Edit Account". In the dialog
that comes up, about halfway down, there will be a checkbox that is titled
"Placeholder". If this has a check in it, remove the check. You will then
be able to edit transactions in this account. In the same way, if you want
the parent account, like "Bank of America", or "Bank Accounts", to be
locked to entering transactions, you would right click on each of those,
edit the accounts and check the "Placeholder" box, thus locking them.

To be clear, the placeholder tag applies only to the specific account, it
does not propagate down to child accounts.

Hope this helps.

Russell
