That's generally how it works. 

You can update quotes with a command line command. I'm not on my main computer right now, or I'd tell you what it is... I'm not sure how well it works under windows. For a while I had an applescript that automatically ran the update when I ran gnucash, but I stopped using it (no real reason...).
