Surely it wouldn't be too hard to store the custom report info as a kvp of the book.

Yes, this would be the "ideal" way, but we would need to define a new
core type "report" that could be stored in the data file.  Perhaps it
could be just a blob that gets stored?  But doing this would be a major
shift from the current method.  I don't know if it would work, or not.

It might've been an interesting GSoC project.  ;)
