reading very old (1.6.8) formats

You can try 1.8.  It should be able to read a 1.6 datafile.

While we *try* to maintain backwards compatibility, we tend to only
really test ~1 major release back (e.g. 1.6 -> 1.8, 1.8 -> 2.0, 2.0 ->
2.2, etc).
