Invoice with partial payments

I have a client who has paid a deposit and now needs an invoice for the
balance.

I created a new invoice for this customer at the total price, then
applied a payment to it for the deposit amount.

Today, when I used Find Invoice to find and print out that invoice, it
showed only the full amount, not the amount less the deposit.  How do I
apply partial payments so I can generate a statement showing the
original amount, payments, and the outstanding balance?
