Setting auto invoice numbers to my preferred starting number

Hi Andrew, welcome back.

Recent GCs have a "Counters" tab under File->Properties.  Set the relevant 
entry to IIRC the last used invoice (although it might be the next-to-be-used 
number)

If that isn't there, then you have to hand-edit the data file.  There is a 
value "counters", ISTR it used to be about 50 lines into the data file.  If 
you can coax the list archives into a search, I know I've posted less vague 
insturctions before... take a backup....
