Need help inputting a transaction.

If his share of the gas was $20, why did you withdraw only that amount?  
How did you pay for your share?  Surely, from what you say, the gas was 
$40, in which case, $40 comes from your chequing account, $20 goes to 
the liability, and $20 goes to expenses:auto:gas.
