Hi,

Version 2.2.9 only had the ability to save the data in the "XML file" format, 
the 2.4.x series introduced the ability to save in a selection of database 
formats.

Just hand over the data file, and your new treasurer should be good to go.  If 
you have any saved reports that you use, you may need to look in the 
~/.gnucash directory and hand over the saved-reports-* files, (or possibly 
easier to re-create them to the new user's liking.)
