No menu when opening gnucash

When I try to open gnucash on my Ubuntu 12.04 system, all I get are the 'Tip of the day' and a window showing only the following options "Save" or "Close".

I have removed gnucash and reinstalled it with the same results.

Reading the help manual or the archive have not returned any information about this behavior.

Any pointers as to how to correct this would be appreciated.
