This is in the faq. Grab the right side of the column header, drag right off the window and a scrollbar will appear. Then you can reduce the description column.

How can I widen the rightmost (Balance) column on account register windows?  I can only see 5 figures to the left of the decimal point in the Balance column and I need to be able to see 6 figures plus the minus sign.

I am using the Mac if that makes any difference.
