You can do this in your qif file before you import it. I had a small 
utility written that adds an Australian GST to my downloaded bank qif 
file. I finally got the shits with manually splitting each transaction. 
Saves me 3-4 hours a month in data entry.

gnucash will happily import renamed splits to all different accounts. 
Though as an earlier poster said, it might make more sense to help 
improve the import filter before writing a new one.
