That's not entirely true. GnuCash does have a Close Book function, located on the menus under Tools->Close Book. 

The Close Book function creates two transactions (one for Income accounts, one for Expense accounts) that zeroes those accounts as of the date you select. 

However, as you note, it is not the approach that most users recommend. The reasons for this are complex, and a search of the list archives can explain the many different issues involved. 

More accounting-orineted types have created their own work flows to accommodate statutory requirements for closing books, but for many users, reports are a better way to create year-end snapshots that meet needs.
