There is an open bug report that discusses this 
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388500).

The "Clear history" suggestion is one of the options there. I don't like 
it that much as I have explained in the report. My suggestion would be 
to add a question to the dialog box that pops up when you attempt to 
open a history item that can't be opened anymore.

I'd propose to follow up further discussion on the bug report.
