The original poster's issue is that like most GnuCash users, he is not a
computer expert.  As Geert has documented 
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388500), there are several
ways to give non-programmers a 'safe' way to remove undesired entries
from the MRU list.

Even if imperfect, some method is needed to reduce the number of times
that this issue comes up.  I personally agree that items should not
automatically disappear, since they may be pointing to a resource that
is only temporarily unavailable.

For reference, in Keepass 2.22 the File > Synchronize > Recent Files
list has a final entry > Clear List.  This leaves room for some sort of
'Are you sure?' prompt.  Not elegant, but functional.
