I am sorry to hear that you cannot find a clean backup. I note that another user who encountered this problem found a way to clean this out by manually editing the source XML (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1480865). If you do this, be sure that you have a good backup, as editing the source data can quickly screw all your data up. [Aside: Gnucash defaults to storing your data in compressed format. You can change this in the preferences so that you can edit the XML]

That is unfortunately, my problem.  I was unable to find a backup prior
to creating the template. :-(
