Equity statement mis-information

Hi;
I am a relatively new user to Gnucash and am having setup problems.
 
 
I set up a simple account and right off the bat I go screwy.
 
set up the acct initially with $1000,did nothing else, yet wound up with $2000 for investment. Is this possible?
attached should be 5 snapshots of Gnucash stuff.
 
Can you test this? setup a account  with $1000 and see what you get?
 
p.s. how come when I do options > display and uncheck "omit zero balance fiqures" it is valid for that instance only? 
 
Is this beyond me?
