Start Date for reports

Hello,
Wondering if anyone knows how to ensure the start date is a specific date?
I have recorded four years worth of data, but want my start date of my 
reports to reflect a specific starting date.
I have tried using preferences, but my report still reflects the 
beginning of my data.
